Mai Otome, character review: Arika Yumemiya

Filed under: Mai Otome, My Otome — adoru @ 3:02 pm

Arika Yumemiya is the first person we see in Mai Otome, and probably the series' main hero as well. We don't know much about her upbringing; her family situation is one of the mysteries of Mai Otome. All we know is that she grew up in Galeria, a rather remote place, not knowing much about the world at large before she came to Windbloom to enroll at Garderobe, the famous School of Otome.

Arika is a cheerful and energetic person. She is spontaneous, uncomplicated, and direct, with a positive outlook on life and a kind heart. In episode 2, she decides to take things into her own hands by asking the school council to admit her in person, against prior customs. In episode 6, she recognizes before the teacher that Nina is drowning, and jumps into the pool to save her. Arika is a sociable person who makes friends as she goes along, simply because she is a kind and helpful person.

Mai Otome, character review: Shizuru Viola

Filed under: Mai Otome, My Otome — adoru @ 3:12 pm

In a recent popularity poll about the Otomes in Mai Otome, Meister Shizuru Viola scored first place, followed by Arika and Erstin. The high rankings of cheerful Arika and all-around-lovable Erstin did not surprise me. The top spot for Shizuru did, so I thought it is time to reflect on her character and why she is portrayed the way she is.

In Mai Hime, I pitied Shizuru for her unfulfilled love for Natsuki, and admired her for her stoic suffering over the cards life had dealt her. Even her behavior towards Natsuki in the last episodes of Mai Hime seemed forgivable when I saw how it all went down the tubes in violent and tearful self-destruction. Still, Shizuru didn't play a major role in Mai Hime, and her character had been left largely unexplored.

Mai Otome, episode 12, RAW impressions

Filed under: Mai Otome, My Otome — adoru @ 12:29 pm

Aoi and Sakomizu are in a desperate situation: The assumed prince of Zipang is waiting to see Mashiro, but she is gone MIA. So they make Arika stand in for Mashiro, with Nina posing as Arika. What may sound like a huge embarrassment in the making isn't because the prince of Zipang is fake as well: It is Akira, doubling for Takumi, the real prince. Akira takes a tour of Garderobe, with Arika on his side. The Garderobe girls are having a blast: they showcase some fighting, adore the handsome prince, and giggle a lot about Arika. Shizuru catches Akira's bluff on first sight (ah, female instincts)! She doesn't call it right away but only later, when she enters Akira's room, who is just undressing. Arika, entering innocently, interrupts the showdown giving Akira the chance to escape. Shizuru gives Arika permission and she materializes. Off they go chasing Akira.

In the meantime, Mashiro wakes up in a tent of the homeless, getting a first impression of the living conditions of some of her people. It doesn't really get through to her though: If I got this right, when she hears that people don't have bread to eat, she answers Marie-Antoinette-style "shall they eat candy". Let's hope her people won't have her head on a plate for this lack of reality and insensitivity. Fortunately, Mashiro masquerades as Nina, hiding that she's the queen of Windbloom. She ends up spending the day with Takumi, the real prince of Zipang, who had found her after Mikoto had knocked her out. Somber but kind Takumi is enjoying her company and together they celebrate Mashiro's birthday. Unfortunately, Takumi is still suffering from the illness that marked him in Mai Hime. Akira shows up after a fight with Arika to save Takumi CPR-style who had run out of his medication. Shizuru and gang as well as Takumi and his folks recognize the situation, drop hostilities and retreat to deliberations at Garderobe.

I didn't really get the contents of the talks between Natsuki and Takumi. Something about Mai who we see in a picture is a classmate of Natsuki and apparently the Otome we see in the opening sequence. I guess a summary here has to wait for Doremi's translation. Suffice to say that Mai seems to be entering the game. More immediate, however, it seems that episode 13 will bring some heartache to Akane who is going crazy over Kazu. Looks like she may indeed be the first victim of the series.

Mai Otome, episode 11: Birthday Confusion

Filed under: Mai Otome, My Otome — adoru @ 11:17 am

Finally, the midterms are over, and Arika and her friends are having a celebratory picnic at Garderobe. They talk about how Arika single-handedly broke all records in the repeat exam, catapulting her to the Coral Number 29 position. As was to be expected, Nina remained Coral Number 1 and Tomoe remained Coral Number 2. Irina pokes fun at Nina who dryly had answered that she just did what she always does.

Mai Otome, anything before Episode 11

Filed under: Mai Otome, My Otome — adoru @ 12:38 am

Here we go, a short rundown of the story so far and its main protagonist. Arika is a young girl that grew up in a remote place without much hope or fortune. All we know is that she is "genki" that is always full of energy. She makes it to the fabled Garderobe School of Otome to become a "maid" of some future ruler of some country. These maids possess enormous powers thanks to "nanomachines" that run rampant in their bodies. As a student of the school, Arika makes friends (and enemies) all over the place and endures quite some adventures.

By episode 11, Arika has seen a fair amount of battles and has seen some of the various factions that populate the anime, including the Shibaratsu, Aswalds, various kings and queens, and of course, Garderobe itself, with its many secrets. So far, we have been left in the dark about Arika's upbringing, what happened during her birth, how she relates to the royal bloodline of the country Garderobe is located in, etc. All in all a thickening plot that makes me mad to realize after each episode that it will be another week until the current cliffhanger will be resolved.

There is way too much to be said to bring you a full introduction. Take a look at the blogroll on the right to read up on what other Mai Otome bloggers are saying, or join the discussion on the AnimeSuki Mai Otome forum.
